Tobago is a small island that is easy to get around by rental car. Crown Point Airport is situated close to Scarborough, the island's capital, from where a host of destinations can be easily accessed. A hire car provides a convenient way of seeing the island's sights, particularly as public transport here is fairly poor. The airport is host to a number of car rental companies, with a range of prices available.
If you are considering renting a car to drive around Tobago, we recommend that you arrange it prior to your arrival at the airport. Worth noting, when collecting the hire car, you will need to bring your full driving licence, which must be valid. Local companies tend to be cheaper, although the cars are not usually of the same standard as those provided by the nationals.
There are only a few petrol stations on the island of Tobago and most are only open during the day, so do make sure that you keep an eye on the fuel gauge, and also remember to stay on the left. Petrol here is extremely cheap, making Tobago's rental cars particularly economical.

The roads around Tobago are variable and often winding at times. The main roads tend to be in good condition, being best around Scarborough and the Crown Point Airport. However, further afield, infrequent potholes are not uncommon along some stretches. A rental car offers a surprisingly easy way to travel around Tobago and as the island is fairly small, it is difficult to get lost here.
Local drivers in Tobago are fairly relaxed and do not always indicate before turning, and also regularly stop without warning. Taxis tend to be the worst drivers on the island. Cars are often parked in awkward places and sometimes a fair distance from the curb.
